This is the Frida that looks up. Not at you — at something above, something she's already decided about. The jaw is set, the eyes are searching, and there's no softness in it. I worked the face with more ink than the others, more contrast, more shadow under the cheekbones — because this version of her demanded it. The red flowers are looser here, almost unfinished at the edges, like the color couldn't quite contain itself. That tension between the precision of the face and the freedom of the red — that's the whole painting.
