This piece was born from a deep respect for the cultural traditions of Día de Muertos in Mexico. The figure of the Catrina has always symbolized more than death; it embodies life, celebration, and the connection to those who came before us. I wanted to portray her as regal, adorned with a crown of flowers that represents the beauty and vibrancy of life, even in the face of mortality.
The delicate hummingbirds that frame her remind me of the spirits that visit us during this sacred time, their fleeting presence carrying whispers of the past. The monochromatic palette, contrasted with intricate floral details, allowed me to create a balance between elegance and emotion—a tribute to both the solemnity and joy that Día de Muertos represents.
"Catrina Coronada" invites the viewer to reflect on the delicate interplay between life and death, a reminder that in honoring our ancestors, we keep their stories alive within us.
