Rosas y Oro

Measures: 54 x 41 cm / frame 20 x 20cm

Where the other Catrina is light and open, this one lives in the dark. The background is almost black, the roses are deep red, and she emerges from it all with those blue eyes that see right through you. The turquoise jewelry — the earrings, the necklace — are the only brightness in the piece, and they earn every bit of attention they get.

I painted her close, almost confrontational. No sky, no space around her — just that face and what it carries. The gold baroque frame was part of the idea from the start. It’s not decoration. It’s the altar.
